The Indiana Onsite Wastewater Professional Association (IOWPA) implemented an
installer certification program in 2005. The objective is to educate wastewater
professionals with regard to the Indiana State Rule 410 IAC, assuring consistency
throughout the state.
In January 2010, the membership voted to approve continuing education for
recertification as opposed to re-testing. The details of the continuing education
program are included on the IOWPA website at www.iowpa.org under ‘certification’.
Nearly 50% of Indiana’s county health departments have adopted the IOWPA
certification in place of individual county testing. (This does not replace registering
with your county.) IOWPA offers a training and exam opportunity at each IOWPA
annual conference. It has also been offered during the Indiana Environmental Health
Association’s (IEHA) fall conference and through various county health departments.
As the demand grows, more review and exam opportunities will become available.
The state rule has been revised and a proposed copy is available on the IEHA and
IOWPA websites (www.iehaind.org and www.iowpa.org). Upon the passing of the
proposed rule, all certified professionals MUST RETEST. At this time, we do not know
when that will be or how much time will be allowed prior to testing.
IOWPA is a 501C-3 not-for-profit organization comprised of wastewater removal and
installation contractors, soil scientists, health department environmental officials and
manufacturers and suppliers.
They are committed to protecting the public health and the environment of Indiana by
improving and increasing access to wastewater treatment for individuals and
communities living beyond centralized wastewater treatment facilities. For more
